About Travel to Udon Thani

Udon Thani is one of the four major cities in the North Eastern Region of Thailand. The city has a well developed tourist infrastructure with a number of hotels, bars and restaurants focused on catering to foreign visitors clustered in one part of the city and a large city centre shopping mall. What Udon Thani City itself doesn’t have is any major tourist attractions.

Staying in Udon Thani City

The part of Udon Thani City where the majority of foreign visitors stay is the area close to the train station and Udon Thani Night Market. In particular, on the Prajak Sillapakom Road and Samphan Thamit Alley. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants in this area where English is spoken and international cuisine is served.

The other advantage of staying in this area is the closeness to the mainland train station and the city centre bus station, Udon Thani Bus Terminal 1. Many foreign visitors come to Udon Thani on route to or from somewhere else and if they stay overnight they do so to catch a connecting train, bus or flight the following day.

Places to Visit in Udon Thani City

Udon Thani City was established in the late 19th Century and there are few historic buildings or temples in the city as a consequence.

The centre of the city is located a few kilometres to the west of Udon Thai Railway Station near Nong Prajak Park. Nong Prajak has a large man made lake with giant yellow rubber ducks floating in it, and some well tended gardens. Close to the park is the city’s main temple, Wat Pothisomphon, which features some interesting statues and innovative temple architecture.

Other than the park and main temple, and the city’s shops, you need to travel some distance from the city centre to find interesting places to visit.

Places to Visit in Udon Thani Province

Udon Thani City may have few tourist attractions, however, Udon Thani Province has a number of really good places of interest to explore. The only problem is that in order to get there you either need your own private vehicle or considerable patience and initiative to travel there by public transport.

In particular there are 3 places to visit in Udon Thani Province that we recommend:

• Ban Chiang National Museum: Located 50 km to the east of Udon Thani City, Ban Chiang National Museum houses a fascinating collection of pottery and other artefacts found in Ban Chiang Village. These finds date back around 3,000 years and are significant as they changed our understanding of the development of early technology in the region.
• Wat Kham Chanot: Located 90 km by road to the north of Udon Thani City, Wat Kham Chanot is one of Thailand’s most unusual temples. The unusual thing about this temple is its small forest which is filled with shrines dedicated to two mythical naga (supernatural creatures) who are believed to reside in that forest.
• Phu Phrabat National Park: Located 60 km by road to the north west of Udon Thani City, Phu Phrabat National Park has a series of spectacular stone escarpments and a number of ancient cave paintings.
