About Travel to Pattaya
Pattaya is a large thriving city with around 300,000 permanent residents living in the city centre and nearly 1 million people registered as living in the wider metropolitan area. Pattaya is also one of Thailand’s top tourist destinations attracting in the region of 20 million visitors a year, around half of whom are foreign visitors.
Mass Tourism in Pattaya
Tourism in Pattaya is widely believed to have begun in the 1960s with off-duty American soldiers based in the region coming to the city for short breaks by the sea. This may be true, however, Pattaya has also been a long time holiday destination for Thai vacationers in part because it has the closest good beach to Bangkok, which is only a 2 hour drive from Pattaya.
Whilst Pattaya is frequently thought of as a destination primarily for single young men, the city also attracts lots of families. Pattaya is a diverse city and different parts of the city better suit different types of visitors.

Where to Stay in Pattaya
Pattaya has over 300 hotels, guesthouses, resorts, and hostels ranging in price from as little as 500 THB a night for a basic room to around 5,000 THB for one of the more luxurious hotels such as Grande Centre Point Pattaya. Overall, accommodation in Pattaya is good value for money. It’s generally a cheaper place to stay than Phuket or Koh Samui, for example.
Tourist accommodation can be found in most parts of the city, and depending upon who you are and what you want to get out of your trip to Pattaya it’s a good idea to do some research in advance as to where to stay. Some parts of the city, particularly near areas such as Soi LK Metro and Walking Street, are not really suitable for children or older people who might take offence at heavy drinking and the associated anti-social behaviour, or bars with scantily clad young women.
The centre of Pattaya city tends to be the liveliest part of the city and best suited to young male visitors. Areas to the north of the city, such Naklua, and to the south, such as Jomtien, are generally considered to be a better choice for families and couples.
Things to Do in Pattaya
Pattaya isn’t an old city like Chiang Mai or Bangkok with palaces and ancient temples to explore. What Pattaya does have, however, is beaches and some of Thailand’s best man-made tourist attractions. There’s enough to do in Pattaya, besides consuming alcohol and visiting go-go bars, to entertain visitors for at least several days and this is another reason why the city is such a successful tourist destination:
- Beaches: There are several swimming beaches in Pattaya City itself, and nearby, the most popular of which are:
- The 3 km long Pattaya Beach in the city centre.
- The 6 km long Jomtien Beach to the south of the city centre.
- The 1.2 km long Wong Amat Beach to the north of the city centre.
- Koh Larn, which is a small island 8 km off the coast with the best beaches in the area.
- Water parks: Pattaya’s water parks are its most popular tourist attractions. The most visited of which are:
- Ramayana Water Park
- Cartoon Network Amazone
- Scenic Attractions: Pattaya has several outdoor attractions located a short distance outside the city which are well worth visiting:
- Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
- Silverlake Winery Pattaya
- Religious Attractions: Although Pattaya doesn’t have any ancient temples it does have a range of very impressive new religious sites which are popular tourist attractions:
- Buddha Mountain
- Wat Phra Yai
- Sanctuary of Truth
- Wildlife Attractions: Pattaya also has lots of both large and small centres with exotic animals on display for visitors, some trained to perform in shows. The most popular of these types of attraction are:
- The Million Years Stone Park & Pattaya Crocodile Farm
- Pattaya Dolphin World
- Tiger Park Pattaya
- Pattaya Elephant Village
