The U-Thong Hotel is one of the better budget hotels in Phitsanulok in the Northern region of Thailand.
Good points about U-Thong Hotel
The U-Thong Hotel is a 90 room purpose built hotel with a steady stream of mostly Thai guests. The hotel is professionally run with a permanently staffed reception desk and porters on hand to show guests to their room. The reception staff have a basic grasp of English and a good grasp of the online reservation systems they use, with guests swiftly checked into their rooms. The hotel is cheap but that doesn’t mean the hotel is poorly run.
The rooms and facilities at the U-Thong Hotel represent good value for money. In 2019 when we visited the standard room price was 450 THB including a basic breakfast with tea or coffee and orange juice. There are few large town centre hotels in Thailand where you can get more for your money.
U-Thong Hotel is also well located. Phitsanulok Railway Station is 1.6 km walking distance and the town centre bus station (Phitsanulok Bus Terminal 1) is 1 km walking distance away from the U Thong Hotel. The U-Thong Hotel is also conveniently located on the same road as the city centre night market which features around 100 food stalls and is normally the most lively place in Phitsanulok in the evening. There are also three 24 hour convenience stores within a 2 minute walk of the entrance to the U-Thong Hotel.
Rooms at U-Thong Hotel
Standard rooms at the U-Thong Hotel are twin rooms featuring two single beds. The U-Thong Hotel’s primary customer base is business travellers and overnight guests breaking up long journeys to and from the North of Thailand or Myanmar via the border crossing at Mae Sot. In this respect opting for twin rooms better suits the type of customers they mostly attract. This may be not what couples on holiday want but the benefits of staying here will, for most people, outweigh the absence of the option of staying in a double bed.
The beds at the U Thong Hotel are comfortable and the air-conditioning worked fine in the room where we stayed. No complaints in terms of getting a decent night’s sleep. The hotel is not noisy at night.
The bathrooms at U-Thong Hotel are adequate and clean. The shower had reasonable hot water and sufficient water pressure and everything else worked well. For the price, these are some of the better bathrooms you will find at a provincial hotel in Thailand.
Facilities at the U Thong Hotel
All rooms at the U Thong Hotel come equipped with flat screen TV and a small refrigerator. The TV had a single English language channel (FX) which was good as most small hotels in the North of Thailand (outside of Chiang Mai) generally have no English language TV channels.
The U Thong Hotel has a large breakfast room by the reception. Breakfast is included in the room price. The breakfast is self service hot drinks, juice, and bread with a toaster, butter and jam. You can also order Thai curry with rice or rice soup.
Immediately in front of the U-Thong Hotel is a branch of Cafe Amazon where you can get fresh real coffee and a range of breakfast items if what is on offer for free in the breakfast room doesn’t suit you.
