About Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang
Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang is a small but very beautiful temple. The exact date the temple was founded is not known, although most likely the temple was established in the late 17th Century or early 18th Century.

There are a number of reasons why Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang is a more popular visitor attraction than the many other Buddhist temples in and around the town of Uttaradit.

Firstly, Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang is a visually attractive temple. It features a traditional Lanna style temple building which has a wooden roof with elaborately decorated fascia boards. Inside the temple is a large Buddhist statue and some interesting and nearly faded wall murals. Behind the prayer hall is a large Sri Lankan style chedi tower which is covered in gold paint.

The second reason why people like to visit Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang is that it is an historically important temple. One of the legendary heroes of Thailand’s past, Phraya Pichai, is believed to have worshipped at Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang. Phraya Pichai served as an important General in King Thaksin the Great’s army. Phraya Pichai is credited with leading attacks against invading Burmese armies which resulted in the Kingdom of Siam achieving independence from Burmese rule. King Thaksin ended up being executed in a coup, and rather than join the side of the new King Phraya Pichai opted to be executed as well, such was his loyalty to King Thaksin.

Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang is also located on a site which is believed to have been where the ancient town of Laplae was located. There are many legends about Laplae, which existed long before Uttaradit. Laplae was, according to local folklore, a magical place that only honest people could enter and people who told lies had to leave. The Lord Buddha is also believed to have visited Laplae and a holy relic of the Lord Buddha is said to be enshrined within the temple’s chedi.
