I am on a tight budget. What is the cheapest way to get from the main airport in Bangkok to Chiang Mai?

The cheapest way to do it is to get the free airport shuttle bus from Suvarnabhumi Airport to the domestic airport (Don Mueang Airport), then get the local bus from outside the airport to Morchit Bus Terminal, and from there get a bus to Chiang Mai. Even booking the ticket online before you go the total journey will cost you exactly 564 THB.
Stage 1: Bus to Don Mueang Airport (Free)
Buses leave from Suvarnabhumi Airport on the 2nd Floor from 05.00 until 24.00. They leave on the hour every hour. From 12.00 until 21.00 there also departures at 20 minutes past the hour and 40 minutes past the hour as well. The bus is free and takes about 50 minutes.
Stage 2: Bus from Don Mueang Airport to Morchit Bus Station (30 THB)
Catch the A1 Bus from in front of Don Mueang aiport to Morchit Bus Station. The buses leave every 20 minutes from 07.30 to 24.00. This bus journey costs 30 THB and takes around 30 minutes.
Stage 3: Bus from Morchit Bus Station to Chiang Mai (534 THB)
From the bus station its 8 to 10 hours by bus depending on the time of day. Booked online the cheapest tickets cost 534 THB.
